Uncle Dick Drops Dead

Adam Dupee Suddenly Expires While Smoking His Pipe

Adam Dupee, an old resident of Stillwater, better known as 'Uncle Dick', dropped dead at his home in the southwestern part of the city about 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon.

Uncle Dick had been as hearty and jolly as usual, had eaten dinner with his wife and a woman guest, and after the meal had gone into the kitchen to 'take a good smoke', as he remarked. A moment later Mrs DuPee went into the kitchen and found him dead in his chair, the pipe still smoking, having dropped from his lips.

Adam DuPee was 84 years old. He was a veteran of the Civil War and a member of the G. A. R.. His children living in Stillwater are Ed and Dick Dupree, Mrs Lewis Haycraft and Mrs Carrie Mae Tucker. Notes concerning Edward & Nettie:

This comes from an old Stillwater, Oklahoma newspaper clipping that my Grandma (Hazel DuPree) has:

Mr. and Mrs. Ed DuPree Wed Here 50 Years Ago

Mr. and Mrs. Ed DuPree, 527 East Thirteenth avenue, were married fifty years ago Monday at his home in Stillwater, a few months after they had arrived here in 1889 with their pioneering families. They have continued to make Stillwater their permanent address since that time, being away from here to live only temporarily and for a short time on two or three occassions while he worked at his occupation as a plasterer and carpenter.

Families of Mr. and Mrs. DuPree arrived in Stillwater about the same time-June of 1889. He came here with his parents from Winfield, Kan., and helped his father operate a sawmill " to saw up lumber for alot of the early-day cottonwood shacks."

Mrs. DuPree's parents came from Morocco, Ind. The two young people became acquainted and were married July 22, 1890, at the DuPree home, which was located at the southwest corner of the present Main street and Tenth avenue intersection.

They have three sons and three daughters, all of whom were born, reared and educated here. One son lives in Chicago, one in Minneapolis, Minn., and the third, Eddie, is in Stillwater. Two daughters live at Sapulpa and one in Salem, Ill.

There was no special observance at the DuPree home Monday on the event of the Golden wedding anniversary. The two daughters living at Sapulpa were here Sunday to visit with their parents, but could not stay over for Monday.

As a plasterer and carpenter, DuPree has had a definite part in the building of Stillwater. He recalled Monday that he has built more than forty houses in Stillwater and has helped with many others. His father brought along sawmill equipment when he came to Stillwater over fifty-one years ago. They operated the mill for some time, then turned to the business of freighting between Stillwater, Guthrie, Perry and Arkansas City. In more recent years his work has been chiefly that of plastering.

Mr. and Mrs. DuPree are among the few remaining pioneers who watched Stillwater spring up as a village and, in fifty years, grow into a city of more than 10,000 persons. End.

Edward died of Hemiplegia due to hypertension.

(The following information is from an old newspaper article)

DuPree Shot Down German

An Eighth Air Force Fighter Station, England-(Special to the News-Press)--

While escorting American heavy bombers in the vicinity of Kassel, Germany, Lieut. Charles W. DuPree, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward DuPree of 517 E. 13th avenue, Stillwater, Okla., shot down a Focke Wulf 190, one of the five enemy planes destroyed over the 700 mark, (227 of which were destroyed in hazzardous ground strafing operation).

Lieut. DuPree, a member of the famous P-51 Mustang fighter group commanded by Col. Don Blakeslee, of Fairport Harbor, Ohio, was flying escort for the bombers when mixed squadrons of Messerschmitt 190's and Focke Wulf 190's started an attack.

"I saw this Focke Wulf below me," related DuPree, "so I 'split-S' and went down on him. He started to turn and I turned with him. This put me right on his tail and I opened up with my guns. I saw pieces fly off of his ship, then it looked like his motor quit.

"As I had more speed, I overshot and damned near rammed him. I could see him in the cockpit and it looked like he was grinning at me. He now had the advantage and was soon on my tail. Then we had a hell of a dog fight.

"Four more Jerries came along about this time and he tried to join up with them as his ship was badly damaged buy they would have nothing to do with him. I was above his ship then so I made a final dive and clobbered the day-lights out of his ship. He bailed out and his plane went spinning crazily through the clouds.

Liet. DuPree now claims to be a specialist at destroying Focke Wulf 190's as his two previous victories have both been over this type of German fighter craft.

In addition to the three enemy planes he has destroyed, the 26 yr. old Sooner pilot has damaged two German bombers while ground strafing airdromes deep in Germany.(End)
